Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 4th April, 2017.

I, SHANE ROSS, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 1 (2) of the Road Traffic Act 2016 (No. 21 of 2016), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic Act 2016 (Commencement) Order 2017.

2. In this Order “Act of 2016” means the Road Traffic Act 2016 (No. 21 of 2016).

3. The 30th day of March 2017 is appointed as the day on which sections 1, 2 and 20 of the Act of 2016 come into operation.

4. The 13th day of April 2017 is appointed as the day on which the following provisions of the Act of 2016 come into operation:

(a) sections 7 to 19;

(b) sections 21 and 22;

(c) sections 32 and 33;

(d) section 37.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation.)

This order brings into effect, from 13 April 2017, certain provisions of the Road Traffic Act 2016 , relating to drug driving offences, preliminary drug testing of drivers, and a number of procedural amendments. The Order also gives effect from 30 March 2017 to section 20 of the Act, relating to functions of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety.
