LEGALLY BINDING DECISION OF THE FINANCIAL SERVICES AND PENSIONS OMBUDSMAN

Background

This complaint relates to the Complainant's motor insurance policy.

The Complainant’s Case

The Complainant submits that he attempted to purchase motor insurance but that he "was

refused insurance cover by three insurance companies" and "understands that he was

refused insurance cover because he was imprisoned for [a number of] years, as a political

prisoner".

As he was unable to obtain motor insurance, he contacted the Declined Cases Committee

of Insurance Ireland and was then offered insurance from the Provider. The Complainant

submits that the Provider "wrongfully and unfairly quoted the Complainant an exorbitant

car insurance premium" of €6,330.91 (Six thousand, three hundred and thirty Euro and

ninety-one cent). The Complainant "believes this quotation is non-sensical" and considers

the premium exorbitant and unfair.

The Complainant states that in May 2024 the Provider contacted him and offered an

insurance renewal for €4000 (Four thousand Euro) but that this was still too high. The
