FOREWORD
Asthemostrecent(ofmany)UCCgraduatestohaveservedasthePresidentof
theLawSocietyofIrelandIamveryhonouredtohavebeenaskedtocontribute
theforewordtothelatestadditiontotheCorkOnlineLawReview.Tomaskmy
ownembarrassmentIwillnotlistthosewhohavegonebeforemeinaccepting
thistask,butitisnoexaggerationtosaythattheyaredrawnfromtheveryfinest
intheirrespectivedisciplinesandallwithadifferentperspectiveonthejustice
scheme.Itisthereforeatributetothequality,andespeciallytherelevanceofthe
workofthereview,thatithasbeenacknowledgedasbeingofrealvaluetosuch
abroadrangeoflegalinterest.
Fromthepointofviewofthepractitionerthereviewprovidesawelcomebreak
fromdrystudyoftheapplicationofStatutesanddecidedcases,andpermitsofa
broaderanalysisofunderlyinglegalprinciple.Weallbenefitfromtheeffortsof
thosewhotaketimetoconductsuchindepthanalysisoflegaltopics,wherea
practitionermightnotreadilymakethetimeto“review”andmightfeelill‐
equippedto“critique”.
Itwouldbe,Ithink,unrealtoignorethefactthatin2009globalsocietyis
convulsedwithconsiderationofthefinancialcrisis.Thehelplessnessexperienced
bymanypeoplecouldeasilyleadtodespondencyandinactioninthefaceof
erodingrights.ItishearteningthereforethatthecontributorstotheOnlineLaw
Reviewhavecontinuedtodevotetheirenergiestomajortopicsbothdomestic
andinternationalwhichtouchonthecoreprinciplesthattheruleoflawseeksto
protect.Tothatextentthereviewisnotonlyaninvaluableacademicandindeed
practicalresource,butaninspirationtousallbothpersonallyandprofessionally.
