FOREWORD
Welcoming a New Edition of Cork Online Law Review
I am very conscious that I am following a number of illustrious
predecessors, including the former Chief Justice, Mr Justice Ronan Keane,
and my colleague Mrs Justice Susan Denham.
As President of the Law Reform Commission, however, I have become
particularly aware of the significant role now played by information
technology both in the dissemination of legal knowledge and in the
modernisation and reform of the law itself. Developments in information
technology have also enabled wider studies of comparative legal systems in
other jurisdictions. All of this contributes enormously to the statutory task of
the Law Reform Commission in undertaking examinations and conducting
research with a view to formulating proposals for law reform.
Commentary, analysis and informed criticism such as are published in
the Cork Online Law Review also play an essential role in keeping the law
under review and promoting reform. As was pointed out by Chief Justice
Keane in his Foreword to the first edition of the Cork Online Law Review, the
established tradition of the “Law Review” is of high importance for the future
of legal education and of the law itself. It is good to see that in the continuing
success of the Cork Online Law Review both that tradition and the modern
medium of information technology are united. I congratulate all those
involved in the production of this new edition.
Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness
