Paying guest - Bitten by watch-dog while entering house late at night - Dutyof owner of house to ensure reasonably safe access from the road to the house - Liability for damages.

Defendant received paying guests at her residence during the summer months. Five girls, of whom the plaintiff was one, arrived at the defendant's house as such guests. On the day after their arrival the girls wont to a dance, having informed the defendant that they intended to do so and arranged with her that the hall door should be left on latch to enable them to gain an entrance to the house. They returned to the house at about 11.30 p.m., and on their arrival a watch-dog which had been left at large in the grounds of the house barked loudly. Four of the girls ran into the house on hearing the dog barking but the plaintiff stayed behind to close the gate and proceeded to pat the dog, which thereupon sprang at her and bit her lip.
