Signs that 'Beast from the East' could bring subzero blast to Ireland

The alarm bells were sounded after some meteorologists noticed that high pressure in eastern Europe which translated as wet and windy weather is edging closer to Ireland and could drive the chilly front here

Meteorologist Jim Dale told Express: "There is a change in weather patterns now looking likely at the start of December. If this happens, we are in a classic position to get a cold flow in from the east. This is an indicator of a 'Beast from the East', and although it has not woken up fully yet, it is safe to say the beast is opening its eyes."

Irish weather expert Alan O'Reilly agrees there are increased chances of cooler weather. "Weather models trending towards some higher pressure for the start of December," he wrote on his popular Carlow Weather account. "This would bring more settled weather but also increases chances of cooler weather. Unsettled for the rest of this week and into the weekend though."

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has ruled out a big freeze but admits long-range forecasts "should not be used for specific planning purposes" as "forecasts beyond one week become increasingly uncertain due to the chaotic natures of the atmosphere".

In its monthly forecast, it said: "Week two looks to herald a chance with high pressure generally building close to the northwest of Ireland, the easterly airflow won't drop temperatures significantly in fact holding slightly above normal in the north and closer to average elsewhere."
